Upgrading and modernizing the existing icebreaker fleet
This activity aims to extend the service life and modernize four Swedish icebreakers, as well as convert IB Idun for full icebreaking assistance operations. The upgrades will improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, increase reliability and operational performance, and lower lifecycle costs.
The project will strengthen winter navigation resilience, maritime safety, security of supply, and climate adaptation in the Baltic Sea. The work includes upgrades to the Atle-class vessels, IB Oden, and the conversion of IB Idun.
Task 2.1: Upgrade of the three existing Atle-class icebreakers
This task includes the modernization of the 50-year-old Atle-class icebreakers IB Atle, IB Frej and IB Ymer in order to improve reliability, safety and environmental performance.
Upgrades include new navigation, control and monitoring systems, fire protection systems, and generator systems, as well as the replacement of obsolete equipment and measures to reduce emissions.
All installations will undergo harbour and sea acceptance tests under SMA supervision. The work will be carried out outside the winter season and fully subcontracted.
Task 2.2: Conversion of the existing icebreaker IB Idun for full icebreaking assistance operations
This task upgrades the icebreaker IB Idun into a fully operational 24/7 assistance vessel for winter navigation.
The work includes a redesigned bridge, new navigation and towing systems, upgraded propulsion, lighting and power systems, a new emergency generator, increased crane and accommodation capacity, and adaptation to the Swedish power grid.
All upgrades will undergo acceptance testing under SMA supervision. The work is fully subcontracted and carried out outside the icebreaking season.
Task 2.3: Upgrade of the existing icebreaker IB Oden
This task includes upgrading the icebreaker’s fire protection piping system and replacing the catering waste vacuum tank to improve safety, reliability and compliance with classification rules.
New piping, pumps, control systems and auxiliary equipment will be installed and tested through Harbour Acceptance Tests under SMA supervision.
The work will be carried out outside the winter season, fully subcontracted, and may include asbestos remediation during dismantling.
