Work package 3
Construction of an agile and low-emission B+ icebreaker operating in the Gulf of Finland

This activity aims to deliver a sustainable state-owned hybrid B+ class icebreaker to replace the Finnish icebreaker Voima, built in 1954.

The new vessel will improve reliability, resilience, operational performance and energy efficiency, while reducing emissions through the use of green fuels and modern technology.

It will support safe winter navigation, secure supply chains and strengthen societal resilience in the Baltic Sea.

WP3 includes one task: the construction of the new icebreaker.

Task 3.1: Construction of a B+ class icebreaker

This task covers the construction of a new 100-metre hybrid B+ class icebreaker to replace Voima.

The vessel will feature advanced icebreaking, towing and emergency response capabilities, improved seakeeping performance, lower energy consumption, and future methanol compatibility.

The work includes design finalization, hull construction, machinery and system installation, outfitting, testing, sea trials and final delivery.

The project aims to improve efficiency, safety and resilience in Baltic winter navigation.
